Cooper Pratt’s throwing error helped put the Brewers in a four-run hole Saturday night. His seventh-inning single gave Milwaukee the lead it needed.
The rookie shortstop drove in Brice Turang with the go-ahead run as the Brewers rallied past the Tampa Bay Rays 5–4 at American Family Field, taking a 2–0 World Series lead.
Milwaukee heads to Florida two wins from its first championship after another comeback in a postseason full of them. Seven of the Brewers’ nine playoff victories have come after trailing.
Pratt Comes Through in the Seventh
Turang opened the seventh with a double and advanced to third on Garrett Mitchell’s flyout. Pratt then singled against Kevin Kelly, completing Milwaukee’s climb out of an early 4–0 deficit.
The Brewers had started cutting into Tampa Bay’s lead immediately. William Contreras and Mitchell drove in runs in the bottom of the first, trimming the margin to two.
Milwaukee added another run in the fourth when Rays first baseman Jonathan Aranda misplayed David Hamilton’s grounder. Sal Frelick brought the Brewers even in the sixth, sending an Ian Seymour pitch over the center-field fence.
Brewers Bullpen Holds the Line
Tampa Bay’s offense went quiet after its four-run opening inning.
Five Milwaukee relievers combined for six scoreless innings after starter Logan Henderson exited, giving the Brewers time to work their way back.
Aaron Ashby finished the job in the ninth, striking out Yandy Díaz on a checked swing with the tying run at third.
“They believe and they don’t give up,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said, according to The Associated Press. “They just keep going.”
The series resumes Monday at Tropicana Field. Game 3 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central, with Tampa Bay trying to prevent Milwaukee from moving within one victory of the title. Freddy Peralta faces his former Brewers teammates in Game 3.
